The Law is Clear
To legally ride a motorbike in Indonesia as a foreigner, you need one of two things:
- An Indonesia Driver's License (SIM C).
- A valid motorcycle license from your home country AND an International Driving Permit (IDP).
The "Fines"
Police frequently conduct roadblocks in tourist areas (Canggu, Kuta, Sunset Road). If you are stopped without an IDP, you face a fine. While some officers might ask for "cash settlement" on the spot, the official procedure involves a court date.
The Insurance Trap
Even more critical than the fine is insurance. If you have an accident while driving illegally (without a valid license/IDP), your travel insurance will almost certainly deny your claim. Medical bills in Bali can be astronomical. Do not risk it.
How to Get One?
You must apply for an IDP in your home country before you travel. It is usually a quick and cheap process at your local automobile association.
